The Titanic Story of Evelyn
On Friday April 17th, Lisa Wilkinson was given a tour of our Ruthven Mansions to view the early Adelaide home of Evelyn (nee Marsden) & her husband Dr William James. Lisa has just launched her book The Titanic Story of Evelyn, and was excited to see the building and walk the corridors as Evelyn would have. Evelyn Marsden was the sole Australian born survivor of the Titanic.
Present on the tour also: Lainie Anderson Author, Tamii Caught from our local MP’s office for Lucy Hood, Strata members: Robyn Heitmann, Peter Kerr, Deb Carson and Adelaide Mansions serviced apartments Hotel Manager: Mark Carn
Tour of the Ruthven Mansions with author Lisa Wilkinson - 17th April 2026
Thanks to our strata member, Robyn Heitmann for inviting and organising a tour with respected author, Lisa Wilkinson and Madison Garratt, publicity manager from Hatchette Australia. Evelyn, as our research tells us, lived on the second story of our building from approximately 1913 to 1915, whilst her husband Dr William Abel James worked at the nearby Adelaide Hospital on North Terrace.
Lisa writes an epic tale, of never-before-told true story of Evelyn Marsden, a brave Australian nurse who was the only Australian-born survivor of the sinking of the Titanic. Lisa writes an unforgettable story of the best and worst of humanity.
